Dating from Schumann's last creative period, the Missa Sacra is a magnificent yet virtually unknown work, no doubt due to the circumstances of its composition. Originally written for choir and orchestra, Schumann later produced a version for choir and organ, which he sent under a pseudonym to an English society organizing a composition competition. The work was not published until after the composer's death, at Clara Schumann's insistence, and was rarely performed in concert except in its choir and organ version.
Geoffroy Jourdain and Les Cris de Paris therefore invite us to a complete rediscovery, as they prepare to perform this superb Missa Sacra for the first time on period instruments, with mezzo-soprano Marianne Crebassa as soloist, one of the most talented young singers of the moment.
Although little-known, this Missa Sacra is nonetheless admirably crafted, one of Schuman's finest orchestral creations, which Goeffroy Jourdain has chosen to combine with a splendid a capella cycle by the same composer: a program with Germanic accents, imbued with Romantic exaltation.
Datant de la dernière période créatrice de Schumann, la Missa Sacra est une œuvre magnifique et pourtant quasiment inconnue, pour des raisons tenant sans doute aux circonstances de sa composition. L’ayant initialement écrite pour chœur et orchestre, Schumann en réalisa par la suite une version pour chœur et orgue, qu’il fit parvenir sous un pseudonyme à une société anglaise qui organisait un concours de composition. L’œuvre ne fut finalement éditée qu’après la mort du compositeur, sur l’insistance de Clara Schumann, et ne fut que très rarement programmée en concert, si ce n’est dans sa version chœur et orgue.
C’est donc à une totale redécouverte que nous convient Geoffroy Jourdain et Les Cris de Paris, qui s’apprêtent à restituer, pour la première fois sur instruments d’époque, cette superbe Missa Sacra avec en soliste la mezzo-soprano Marianne Crebassa, l’une des jeunes chanteuses les plus talentueuses du moment.
Bien que méconnue, cette Missa Sacra est pourtant d’une facture admirable, l’une des plus belles créations schumaniennes en matière orchestrale, que Goeffroy Jourdain a choisi d’associer, pour l’occasion, à un cycle splendide a capella du même compositeur: un programme aux accents germaniques, emprunt de l’exaltation romantique.
